Hazel Arleen Hoover (nee Killingbeck)
1934-2025
Hazel Arleen Hoover (nee Killingbeck) passed away peacefully on December 26, 2025 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She was born in Norwood, Ontario, on Tuesday, January 16, 1934, fifth child of parents Evalena and Howard Killingbeck and is predeceased by sisters Beulah, Della, Yvonne, Charlotte and brother Garfield. Also will be remembered lovingly by her sister Gail Vance.
Hazel is predeceased by her loving husband of more than 69 years. It was in 1952 that she and Earl cemented a lifelong friendship, and were married on August 16, 1952. In June, 1956, they relocated to Peterborough and by August, 1958, they purchased the family home on Montgomery Street.
Hazel and Earl have two daughters, Cindy and Sandra. Hazel found her work passion at the Peterborough County School Board, as Secretary to the Superintendent of Program, reporting to Sue Fleck whom she still was in touch with to her end.
Hazel, and Earl, were active for a number of years playing in country music bands. In the early 1970’s, Hazel played bass guitar in their own band named Buckskin. This meant a bit of travelling here and there but, it was something they enjoyed very much.
In recent years, Hazel had moved from their family home on Montgomery Street, to Jackson Creek retirement residence, and then out to Halifax, NS to be closer to Sandra. She lived in Drummond Hall, enhanced care facility with Parkland Clayton Park.
Hazel leaves behind daughters Cindy (Warren), and Sandra; grandchildren, Sarah (Brock), Shayne (Courtney), Tyler (Alisha); and great grandchildren, Ryan, Arlayna, Artemis and Scotia.
Hazel was a happy, caring, cheerful person who loved her family and her friends. Some of her happiest moments were teaching her grandkids to bake! She also loved travelling around the east coast.
In her final years in NS, Hazel made many friends and was very well liked by both the residents and the staff at Drummond Hall. They loved her wit and humour and will miss her dearly.
Hazel was very in touch with her spirituality and found solace in her prayer books.
She will be missed by family and friends. A private family service will be held at a later date.
