James Edward Nighswander

It is with heartfelt sorrow that we share the passing of James Nighswander on December 18, 2025, at the age of 93. Jim was a devoted husband to June, with whom he shared his later years, and he is lovingly remembered by both his own family and the extended family he gained through their marriage. His warmth, kindness, and love of community will be cherished always.
Throughout his life, Jim’s academic achievements reflect his commitment to learning and service. Beyond his career, he will be remembered for the way he touched the lives around him.
James Nighswander, husband of June Stockwell and father of son Mark and daughter Sarah (Michael Halley) and grandchildren Ryan and Mikayla, brother of Mary (deceased) and husband Frank Hill (deceased).
Jim is lovingly remembered by his wife June who was his steadfast companion and partner. He is also remembered by June’s children Trevor and Erin, and Jason and grandchildren Declan, Ily and Evelyln who enriched his later years.

Jim received the Friend of Haliburton Highlands Award for leading a group of scientists with Dr. Orie Louks and MPP Chris Hodgson which established the Clear Lakes Conservation Area. An area at the Apex of the headwaters of the Trent with 17 lakes and ponds and is noted for its Old Growth Forests and numerous research papers.
On his farm near Warsaw, he raised Field Trial Champion Springer Spaniels and sheep dogs that he took to Lang Village on Sheep Day to demonstrate sheep sheering.
In keeping with Jim’s wishes no service will be held.
